Most Popular Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant

Who this is for: Temporary assistance for people aged 18–60 with insufficient means who are not receiving any other social grant.

Who qualifies:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or eligible permit holder listed by SASSA
  • Between 18 and 60 years old
  • Currently residing in South Africa
  • Insufficient means and must pass the means test
  • Not already receiving a social grant for yourself
  • Not living in a government-funded or subsidised institution

How to apply:

Older Person's Grant

Who this is for: South African residents aged 60 and older.

Who qualifies:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
  • Must reside in South Africa
  • 60 years of age or older
  • Not receiving another social grant for yourself
  • Applicant and spouse must pass the means test
  • Not maintained in a State Institution

How to apply:

Child Support Grant

Who this is for: Primary caregivers of children under 18.

Who qualifies:

  • Primary caregiver must be a SA citizen, permanent resident or refugee
  • Both applicant and child must live in South Africa
  • Must be the primary caregiver of the child
  • Child must be under 18 years old
  • Applicant and spouse must pass the means test
  • Maximum 6 non-biological children per applicant
  • Child must not be in a state institution

How to apply:

Disability Grant

Who this is for: People aged 18–59 with a confirmed disability.

Who qualifies:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
  • Must reside in South Africa
  • 18 to 59 years old
  • Medical report confirming disability (not older than 3 months)
  • Applicant and spouse must pass the means test
  • Not in a State Institution
  • Not receiving another social grant for yourself

How to apply: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and medical report. You may need to attend a SASSA medical assessment.

Foster Child Grant

Who this is for: Court-appointed foster parents.

Who qualifies:

  • Foster parent must be a SA citizen, permanent resident or refugee
  • Both applicant and child must live in South Africa
  • Child must be legally placed in your care by a court order
  • Child must remain in your care for the grant duration

How to apply: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID, the child's birth certificate, and the court order.

Care Dependency Grant

Who this is for: Parents or caregivers of children under 18 with a permanent, severe disability.

Who qualifies:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
  • Applicant and child must live in South Africa
  • Child must be under 18 years old
  • Medical report confirming permanent, severe disability
  • Applicant and spouse must pass the means test (except foster parents)
  • Child must not be permanently in a State Institution

Foster parents can apply for both the Foster Child Grant and Care Dependency Grant for the same child.

How to apply: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID, the child's birth certificate, and the medical report.

Grant-in-Aid

Who this is for: People already receiving an Older Person's, Disability, or War Veteran's grant who need daily care.

Who qualifies:

  • Must already receive an Older Person's, Disability, or War Veteran's grant
  • Need regular help from another person for daily activities due to disability
  • Not in an institution receiving State subsidies

This grant cannot stand alone. If your primary grant ends, the Grant-in-Aid also ends.

How to apply: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and medical evidence of your care needs.

War Veteran's Grant

Who this is for: Veterans of the Second World War or Korean War.

Who qualifies:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee residing in South Africa
  • 60 years or older, or disabled
  • Fought in the Second World War or Korean War
  • Applicant and spouse must meet the means test
  • Not maintained in a State institution
  • Not receiving another social grant for yourself

How to apply: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of military service.

Child Support Grant Top-Up

Who this is for: Qualifying relatives caring for orphaned children, or child-headed households.

Who qualifies:

  • Must be a qualifying relative caring for an orphaned child, or a child aged 16–18 who heads a household
  • Both applicant and child must permanently reside in South Africa
  • Child must be younger than 18
  • Applicant and spouse must meet the means test
  • Cannot apply for more than six children
  • Child must not be in a State-funded institution

How to apply: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID, the child's birth certificate, and proof of orphan status or child-headed household.
