It is free to apply — never pay anyone to help you apply.
There are three ways to apply for the SRD grant. Pick whichever is easiest for you.
Use the official SRD website from your phone or computer.
Open srd.sassa.gov.za in your browser. Only use this official website.
Type your 13-digit SA ID number and the cellphone number you want SASSA to contact you on.
Answer the questions and provide your payment details. Check everything, then press Submit. You'll get a confirmation SMS.
Send "Hi" to the official SASSA SRD WhatsApp number and follow the prompts.
This is SASSA's official WhatsApp number for SRD applications, not the Sassa Shesha service.
Dial *134*7737# from your cellphone and follow the prompts. No data needed.
Some grants can be done online. Others require an in-person visit to a SASSA office.
Older Person's, Child Support, and Foster Child grants can be applied for through the SASSA online services portal.
Visit services.sassa.gov.za and select the grant you want to apply for.
You'll need your SA ID number, cellphone number, and banking details. For child grants, also have the child's birth certificate details ready.
SASSA will assess your application and notify you by SMS.
Disability, Care Dependency, Grant-in-Aid, and War Veteran's grants require an in-person application.
Take your original SA ID (green bar-coded or smart card). For disability grants, bring a medical report not older than 3 months. For child-related grants, bring the child's birth certificate.
An official will help you complete the form and take your fingerprints.
SASSA will assess your application. For disability grants, you may need to attend a medical assessment. You'll be notified by SMS.
If SASSA tells you to reapply or update your details, use one of these methods.
Reapply through the SRD website, WhatsApp (082 046 8553), or USSD (*134*7737#).
Select the reapplication or reconsideration option and update your details as needed.
Make sure your banking details and contact information are correct, then submit.
If your application was declined, SASSA must give you the reason in writing and explain your right to appeal.
Understanding the reason helps you decide whether to appeal or reapply with updated information.
For SRD grants declined from April 2022 onwards, use the official SRD appeals portal. For other grants, use the DSD appeals website.
SASSA will review your appeal and notify you of the outcome by SMS. This can take several weeks.
